**Instructor: Karen Lacey

Whilst based in the UK Karen was the Artistic Director for professional group RE-Creation UK www.myspace.com/re_creationuk to which the group have received National and International acclaim. She has been awarded various Choreography awards for her Jazz, Musical Theatre and Fusion styles, in 2009 she added to her list a Champion Place for Contemporary at the Tuscany International Dance Festival. Alongside an Artistic Direction award at the Barcelona International Dance Festival. Her Choreography has been seen in the commercial world for clients such as the BBC, Ribena, Pearsons Publishers and Italian television.

Karen has spent many years managing a successful stage school in the UK, being responsibility for the coordination of the school’s competitive events calendar and choreography for the teams, directing of the bi-annual shows performed at professional theatres and the teaching of Jazz, Contemporary and Musical Theatre. Towards the end of 2009 Karen was invited out to Singapore and Malaysia as a Guest Artist to work with dance students in enhancing their technical skills to produce a better performance quality and musicality. She also spent a weekend at an artist retreat in the Malaysia teaching a selection of her contemporary and jazz repertoire, which was exceptionally well received. Her summer of 2010 was spent in New York studying Salsa and Hustle, alongside advancing her knowledge of Broadway Jazz. During this period she had the fortune of training under the latino legend Maria Torres and as a result she has created a fun and technical Latin Jazz class. Since relocating to Singapore at the end of 2010, Karen has been teaching dance at the Singapore American School, alongside holding various masterclasses in Contemporary and Broadway Jazz. She has also had the opportunity to represent Singapore in Taiwan and Hong Kong, gaining a Championship title for Rising Star Ballroom and a runner up place for Closed Asian Ballroom.

Karen spent 4 years working as a dancer in a touring European cabaret group and many years as a competitive dancer, this experience has enabled her to understand what is needed to be a successful performer and how to manifest a strong stage presence. Karen’s skills are ensuring strong basic technique is in place for all her students and then working with the varying strengths of each individual group to create exciting, interesting choreography that both the performers and audience can engage in and fitting the brief for the competitive floor, theatrical performance or television.
